My essay!!! only late cause my comp is dumb!!

In the novel Life of Pi, Pi’s love for god, belief in his religion, and all around faith is the main theme of this story.
Earlier in the novel, in his home of Pondicherry, Pi’s atheistic biology teacher challenges Pi’s Hindu faith in god. This makes him realize the incredible power of belief, the need stray away from the otherwise bleakness of the universe. Because of his love for God this motivates Pi to learn more. He then begins to learn about other religions such as Christianity and islam which allows him to realize that all these religions share the same foundation, which is a belief of a greater or higher power.
“Scientists are a friendly, atheistic, hard-working lot whose minds are preoccupied with sex, chess and baseball when they are not preoccupied with science.” What this quote should show you is that this is Pi’s perception of how scientists think that in their mind they truly do not think about God because science is their main belief. Pi obviously believes otherwise.
“To choose doubt as a philosophy of life is akin to choosing immobility as a means of transportation.” This quote I chose because it reflects Pi’s beliefs unto the scientist, the scientist doubts that God could exist, so his doubt is akin to choosing to remain still instead of choosing to walk and roam freely. This quote is an example of Pi’s strong belief in his religion and God. In fact it is so strong that he cannot except the scientists view on creation because they are so against God that they could not possibly be true no matter how much of it makes sense. So early on in the book the author has already started to press how big a role religion and faith will play in his novel.
As you read the novel it truly becomes clear to you that Pi is in love with God. He is so in love with God that he chooses to study christianity and islam plus he is already hindu this is according to the religons he has learned of unacceptable as shown in the following quote.
‘After the “Hellos” and the “Good days”, there was an awkward silence. The priest broke it when he said, with pride in his voice, “Piscine is a good Christian boy. I hope to see him join our choir soon.”

My parents, the pandit and the imam looked surprised.

“You must be mistaken. He’s a good Muslim boy. He comes without fail to Friday prayer, and his knowledge of the Holy Qur’an is coming along nicely.” So said the imam.

My parents, the priest and the pandit looked incredulous.

The pandit spoke. “You’re both wrong. He’s a good Hindu boy. I see him all the time at the temple coming for darshan and performing puja.”

My parents, the imam and priest looked astounded.

“There is no mistake,” said the priest. “I know this boy. He is Piscine Molitor Patel and he’s a Christian.”

“I know him too, and I tell you he’s a Muslim,” asserted the imam.

“Nonsense!” cried the pandit. “Piscene was born a Hindu, lives a Hindu and will die a Hindu!”

The three wise men stared at each other, breathless and disbelieving.

Lord, avert their eyes from me, I whispered in my soul.

All eyes fell upon me.’
This quote shows you nto only that the many different religions for whatever reason cannot be one they must be separate with their beliefs and also shown in this quote it seems strange to Pi after all that he has learned from each religion that they do not see that each religion shares the same common belief with only a few beliefs that bare even a slight difference from the others.
‘”Bapu Gandhi said, ‘All religions are true.’ I just want to love God,” I blurted out, and looked down, red in the face.’ This quote shows how angry and upset Pi gets with the men and how they are agruing because Pi must belong to one religion not many, that he must share one belief not many.
These people fail to realize that it is on the inside that God must be defended, not on the outside. They should direct their anger at themselves. For evil in the open is evil from within that has been let out. The main battlefield for good is not the open ground of the public arena but the small clearing of each heart.” This quote is just to help better understand Pi’s feelings on the subject of different religions not being allowed to cross together.
His need for spiritual connection deepens while at sea. In his first couple of days while on the lifeboat he beings to lose faith and he feels the need to give up and it is at this one and only point where he questions God. But while thinking about the tragedy that has befallen him he realizes that he is still alive so God must be with him. He believes he has been given a miracle it’s this very thought that gives him the strength needed to stay alive. After this incident he regularly prays which provides him with a connection to something greater, something holy.
“All living things contain a measure of madness that moves them in strange, sometimes inexplicable ways. This madness can be saving; it is part and parcel of the ability to adapt. Without it, no species would survive.” This quote shows Pi explaining how he came to the realization of God keeping him alive and the fact that his situation could have been much worse for he could have died, he could not of had the chance to survive and figure a way to be rescued.
“Faith in God is an opening up, a letting go, a deep trust, a free act of love- but sometimes it was so hard to love.” This quote shows how his faith had been dwindling during his fight for survival, but kept his faith strong.
So through my essay I have hopefully presented a strong enough case of how Pi’s religious beliefs and his strong willed faith kept him alive during his adventure. Belief in God can be hard when times are difficult but through strong faith as Pi showed you can persevere and rise up.

Lesson Plan

Beat generationLesson plan

Objectives: – What we will attempt to teach the students is what the beat generation was and who it involved as well as the lives of the poets to which belonged to that generation.- We will also attempt to teach the students how to write beat poetry, what literary devices are used.

- By the end of our lesson the students should be able to talk about what the beat generation was and how to write beat poetry

Materials: -laptop: will be used to show presentation and when the time comes will be used to display LBP used to for an incredibly fun and active quiz.

-speakers: will be used so that students can hear sounds from LBP and characters from the presentation

-Projector: will be used to show everything visually.

-Playstation 3( Zack Golding will be bringing this): will be used to play LBP this will be connected to the projector so that LBP can be displayed.

Methodology: -The power point presentation will begin. Darren will start off by talking about Allen Ginsberg’s life, he will then proceed to discuss thoughts on Allen’s poem “The Lion for Real” as well as show his analysis.

- Next Zack will continue the presentation by talking about Gary Snyder’s life and his poetic works. He will then proceed to discuss Gary’s poem “RipRap” as well give his analysis.

-Jessica will then finish the presentation with her talk of T.S. Elliot’s life and accomplishments. She will then proceed to discuss Elliot’s poem “The Hollow Man”.

-The group will then teach the basics on beat poetry and how to write it

-Zack will then setup LBP so that students can participate in an active quiz.

Evaluation: – The quiz and also allowing the students to try their hand at beat poetry should tell how us how our lesson went.

Motivation: – LBP is a fun, cute, and funky video game that allows you to create anything. With this creative power Zack has created and extremely enjoyable quiz that hopefully students will enjoy. Presentation will be visually interesting.

Group: Zack Golding, Darren Gillam, Jessica Seguin

This should help with analysing those poems:D enjoy!

Writing Your Paper

The actual writing of the paper is probably the easiest task because you have already identified everything that needs to be covered. You may wish to cover all the important items in your own order, however, the order listed above does work well.

Most likely you will not be able to simply write a few lines for each device, rather you must group these devices together. A proper order of paragraphs may flow like this:

I. Dramatic Situation
A. Who is speaking?
B. To whom is that speaker speaking?
C. What is the situation?
D. What is the speaker’s tone?

II. Imagery

III. Theme

IV. Diction (word choice)
A. Connotation (suggested meaning of words)
B. Denotation (dictionary definition)
C. Abstract (can only be understood intellectually)
D. Concrete (words describing physical objects)
E. Kinds of language
1. Figurative
a. Metaphor (implied comparisons)
b. Simile (comparison using ‘like’ or ‘as’)
c. Personification (giving human characteristics to an inanimate object)
d. Metonymy (the use of an attribute or quality of an object to represent the object itself)
e. Synecdoche (substitutes a significant part of something for the thing itself)
2. Rhetorical
a. Irony (opposite of what is meant)
b. Hyperbole (exaggeration)

g. Litotes (form of understatement)

V. Syntax (sentence structure)
A. Length

MY ESSAY TEST……… please excuse poor quality it was a bit rushed

Thesis: The film Unbreakable directed by M. Night Shyamalan contains many archetypes from mythopoeic criticism.

Reason: David Dunn the protagonist mirrors the Hero archetype: the main character of the story.  Throughout the film David is represented as some kind of superhero due to extraordinary abilities such as the immunity to illness, also he can’t get hurt he is impervious to damage, he can sense what others have done wrong, also he has super human strength it would seem as in one scene him and his son are lifting weights, the son adds extra without the acknowledgement of his father, David notices the added weight and finds himself surprised that he has lifted past his limits.

Example: “I’ve never been sick, I’ve never been injured… what do I do now?” this quote shows his super human abilities and a characteristic of the Hero which is seeking guidance from the Wise Old Man archetype this is a staple in mythopoeic criticism the Hero always seeks the guidance of the Wise Old Man.

Example: Another example is the Hero always has an obstacle to overcome or he has many in this case its many as David must overcome the trickster Elijah Price. Elijah starts off as a crazy comic fanboy who would want nothing more then to find a real superhero then David appears and Elijah and him become friends Elijah helps David understand his powers. Now at the beginning of the film David survives a train crash unscathed this is where he finds out he is superhuman, the train wreck is brought back up at the end when Elijah reveals he’s been behind all the tragic disasters: a burning building, a plane crash, and finally the train wreck. The purpose of this he reveals is to find someone who survived and is miracoulsy unharmed, so who was once David’s friend  is now his enemy or villain this represents the Trickster archetype .

Reason: Elijah represents a few mythopoeic archetypes these include Wise Old Man the archetype that aids the hero in his quest, the Trickster who starts off as good and later becomes evil, and in some ways Death the obstacle in front of the Hero.

Example: “Now that we know who you are… I know who I am. I’m not a mistake! It all makes sense. In a comic, you know how you can tell who the arch-villain’s going to be? He’s the exact opposite of the hero, and most time’s they’re friends, like you and me. I should’ve known way back when. You know why, David? Because of the kids. They called me Mr. Glass.” In this quote you see the point at which it is revealed that has been Elijah who has wreaked havoc on the city and killed countless people all for his own beliefs. This is also the point where you see the transition from Wise Old Man to Trickster and where the two men become enemies.

Example: “Your bones don’t break, mine do. That’s clear. Your cells react to bacteria and viruses differently than mine. You don’t get sick, I do. That’s also clear. But for some reason, you and I react the exact same way to water. We swallow it too fast, we choke. We get some in our lungs, we drown. However unreal it may seem, we are connected, you and I. We’re on the same curve, just on opposite ends.” This quote shows how opposite Elijah and David are and what I believe to be foreshadowing showing you that Elijah could be the possible villain hint at his change from Wise Old Man to Trickster.

Example: ‘Elijah Price: Why is it, do you think, that of all the professions in the world you chose protection?
David Dunn: You are a very strange man.
Elijah Price: You could have been a tax accountant. You could have owned your own gym. You could have opened a chain of restaurants. You could’ve done of ten thousand things, but in the end, you chose to protect people. *You* made that decision, and I find that very, very interesting.’

This quote I believe shows Elijah guiding David trying to convince him of his superhuman abilities. This would be a point where Elijah represents the Wise Old Man archetype guiding David aka the Hero.

Conclusion: Although the film Unbreakable does not include many archetypes from mythopoeic criticism it does include a few that drive the plot points and the film itself up until the conclusion of the film.

Essay outline……also long overdue…..my bad:(
